The Ekiti State Government on Wednesday announced the commencement of the implementation of its Social Welfare Scheme for the needy, aged and unemployed. Under the scheme, 10,000 beneficiaries already shortlisted, would receive N5,000 each monthly.

Gov. Ayo Fayose, who launched the scheme, said beneficiaries cut across various strata of the society.
He said the money was being paid directly into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries.
According to the governor, the programme was designed to reduce the financial challenges faced by the people due to hardship.

The governor assured that in spite the current economic downturn, his administration would still find ways of helping the downtrodden to enable them live in some level of comfort.

NAN reports that he said the beneficiaries cut across the physically-challenged, the albinos, visually-impaired, the aged, among others.

The governor said no fewer than 6,000 beneficiaries had their accounts credited with the money on Wednesday, Oct. 5, the kick-off date.

He explained that by directly crediting accounts of beneficiaries, the state was eliminating fraud and ensuring that the real beneficiaries get the money.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested a man identified as Ibrahim Babangida, for offences bordering on criminal breach of trust, attempted theft, conspiracy and impersonation.
Also arrested with him is another suspect bearing Murtala Mohammed, along with the driver of the agency, who was identified as Nasiru Isa.
The driver, who joined the Commission about 18 months ago, is a member of a criminal syndicate that attempted to break into a sealed property by the EFCC, with the intent of carting away goods suspected to be proceeds of money laundering.
The syndicate, apart from Isa, Babangida and Mohammed, includes a mobile police officer, Corporal Aliyu Ismaila, Abubakar Jibrin, Abdulsalam Ado, Reuben Dauda, Hassan Aliyu, Sani Yusuf.
Located in the choice area of Garki, Abuja, the property is currently under investigation by the agency, and became a subject of interest, in the aftermath of findings into the N3.9 billion fraud case involving a former Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (retd). The property was also linked to the wife of the former CDS.
Investigations by EFCC operatives revealed that shortly after the property was sealed, some individuals moved about 12 bags believed to contain items linked to money laundering offence, into the property.
On August 30, operatives of the EFCC as part of monitoring activities on the sealed property, had gone to site to execute a search. However, members of the syndicate took to their heels on sighting the operatives of the anti-graft agency. A carpenter, Yakubu Muhammad, who was hired by the syndicate, was left behind and was subsequently arrested by the operatives.
The carpenter, who has been cooperating with operatives, confessed that he was not in the know of the illicit activity. He said he was only brought in by the syndicate to assist with the use of his carpentry tools to break into the property.
Investigations revealed that one of those in the know about the goods was the brain behind the scheming to steal them. The syndicate decided they would need to subdue the security man at the property, which would mean they would need to involve security personnel in the syndicate.
Subsequently, Mr. Isa was contacted. To further beef up the security aspect of the crime, he also contacted his friend, Mr. Ismaila, who came for the “operation” fully armed. In perpetrating the crime, Mr. Dauda had posed to be a senior staff with the EFCC, while Mr. Jibrin posed as an Intelligence police officer in the office of the Inspector General of Police
However, nemesis caught up with them on August 30 when they were caught in the act of breaking into the property, having successfully overpowered the security guard at the entrance.
They would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

An Abuja Chief Magistrate Court today ordered the freezing of the bank accounts of former Benue State Finance Commissioner, Mr. Omadachi Oklobia, and 12 others recently arrested and detained in connection with their indictment by the Elizabeth Kpojime Commission of Inquiry.
The court gave the order while ruling on an exparte motion brought before it by lawyers of police detectives handling the investigation into the matter.
Impeccable judicial sources confirmed that 13 of the 52 persons indicted for looting N107 billion from the coffers of the Benue State Government under Governor Gabriel Suswam have been affected by the court order.
These, according to the sources, include former Special Adviser, Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Solomon Wombo, former Permanent Secretary at the Bureau, Mr. Asen Sambe, former Accountant, Mr. Isaiah Ipevnor as well as former chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Comrade Richard Gbande.
It has also been confirmed that the order has been served on all the affected banks.
The Benue State Government had forwarded the white paper on the report to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, and the police for further necessary action.
The police, believed to be acting on behalf of the anti-graft bodies and the state government, arrested 13 persons last week including those mentioned and took them to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for interrogation.
They have however, being granted police bail after giving statements pending their arraignment in court.
Reacting to the development, State Attorney General and Justice Commissioner, Mr. Michael Gusa, expressed the determination of the state government to follow due process in the recovery of the looted funds.
He stated that when recovered the funds would be used to meet government obligations including payment of salary arrears and retirement benefits owed pensioners as well provision of critical infrastructure.

A dead body of a yet to be identified man was found in the Atakpo river at Ibusa in Oshimili North Local government area of Delta state today. His body was brought out and placed in the middle of the road. The youths in the area are presently protesting the recurring deaths that have been witnessed in their community.

According to a Facebook user, Christian Onwugbolu who shared some photos on social media, the corpse of an unidentified man was discovered in Atakpo river in the Ibusa area of Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, earlier today.
It was gathered that the deceased’s body was brought out and placed in the middle of the road as youths and other angry residents in the area are presently protesting the recurring deaths that have been witnessed in their

Following blistering public remarks on his economic policies by the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido, President Muhammadu Buhari has requested top traditional rulers in the country to henceforth put their advice across to him in private written memos.

Buhari made the request through the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who visited him at the Presidential Villa as follow up on a private memo he wrote to him on the state of the nation.


The Emir of Kano, who is the immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had on Wednesday used a public function in Kaduna to blast Buhari’s handling of the economy, particularly the unproductive subsidy on certain foreign exchange transactions.

Emerging from his meeting with the President, Oba Adeyemi told State House correspondents that the President invited him over on the strength of the advice contained in his written memo.

The revered monarch said “As a Nigerian and one of the topmost traditional rulers in the country, I sent a memorandum to the President which he acknowledged and asked me to come and endorse those things I have written.

“I think it was time for me to use the proper channel to reach the President for suggestions and advice. Where he deserves commendation, I should also do that especially as it concerns the multi-dimensional problems Nigeria is facing like the Avengers and bombing of oil installations, MEND and Boko Haram insurgency in the North East.”

According to the Alafin, “The President listened attentively and has asked me to pass the information to other traditional rulers in my domain to assist the government by giving advice because he is a good listener; but that such advice should be put in writing so that he can then relate it to the problems affecting Nigeria.”

He commended the President for acting swiftly to flush out criminal elements that wanted to extend militancy to Lagos and the rest of South-West.

The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, says he has submitted himself to the police for investigation into the budget padding allegations levelled against the leadership of the lower chamber.

According to a statement issued on Friday, August 19, Gbajabiamila said he was part of those who took the decision to sack Abdulmumin Jibrin as the Chairman of the of the house committee on appropriation.
Following his removal, Jibrin had accused Speaker Yakubu Dogara and other principal officers of the house, except Gbajabiamila, of illegally inserting constituency projects worth billions of naira into the 2016 budget.
The house leader, who said he has been accused of collaborating with Jibrin, cleared the air on the matter.
He said: “I returned from the United States just yesterday after a three-week break. I called the speaker a day before my return to urgently fix a principal officers’ meeting so we could address the several allegations made by Hon Jibrin.
“At the meeting Speaker Dogara, Deputy Speaker Lasun , Chief Whip, Hon Ado Dogwa and Minority Leader, Hon Leo Ogor passionately and vigorously clearly stated their innocence.
“A prepared text was read and we all agreed to sign. For me as the leader of the house, I felt it was important to give them the benefit of doubt which in any case is what our constitution says.
“The decision to relieve Hon Jibrin was indeed a collective decision of which I was a part of.
“However, I gave a caveat before the press release was signed, I made it clear to my colleagues in the leadership that because somehow my name had been sullied in all of this and fake documents and publications had been put out there in traditional and social media, which stated I was also involved in the so-called padding of the budget, that I would need to clear my name and that even though no petition was filed against me by Hon Jibrin and no invitation was extended to me by the police, I would be submitting myself on my own volition to the police for investigation.
“This is important to me as insinuations have been made from many quarters that I along with others was sponsoring Hon Jibrin. I have just this afternoon met with the police authorities for a proper and thorough investigation of my role if any in this whole bizzare episode.”
Dogara and other principal officers accused of padding the budget have since denied the allegations.

Why Am Actually Linked To N'Delta Avengers - Jonathan Breaks Silence, Tells The Untold
Apparently, in denial of alleged sponsorship of the insurgent group , the Niger Delta Avengers again, an ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has said that the allegation was being sponsored by those who were intimidated by his rising profile in Nigeria and abroad.

There had been publications that the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government had begun probing Jonathan over alleged link to the Niger Delta Avengers.

The former President in a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, on Thursday, however said;, 
“It is sad that the publications wore the cloak of deceit from the same misguided characters that are hell-bent on pulling down the former President despite his clear record of diligent service to his country and long-standing commitment to the good of the society.
“There is no doubt that there exists such people who may have scores to settle with the former President, but are now feeling frustrated by the fact that his national and international profiles have continued to rise despite their recourse to endless muck-raking character assassination. Such people will stop at nothing to continue to throw obstacles, albeit futilely, on his path.
“We are aware that the same people approached other well-meaning newspapers with the same false information, but they were wise to turn it down on account of its absurdity.”

The Ex-President advised the media to be professional and do more of investigative reporting instead of making reference to allegations of aggrieved militants.

He said no responsible security agency would release such falsehood to the press.

The statement further read;

“From what we know about intelligence gathering, there is no responsible government agency that would rush, as claimed in the newspaper stories, to adopt the accusations of a questionable rebellious organisation as its own findings, without applying the professional processes of rigour and due diligence.
“Our media houses should be careful not to make the country a laughing stock by being hoodwinked into passing off the perverted voices of irritant groups as that of our well-respected official and security authorities.”
The ex-President said newspapers promoting spurious allegations against him were toying with libel and destroying the image of Nigeria.
“Apart from toying with the serious issue of libel, those newspapers lending themselves to be cheaply used by miscreants are also doing gross disservice to our collective good and the image of the country,” he said

In a Key Note Address, the Wife of the Governor said;
2. I am thrilled to be here today as we launch End Violence Against Children (EVAC) in Benue State, this is an unprecedented effort to join the World and National Campaign on "The Year of Action to End Violence Against Children". It is therefore not a coincidence that I stand here too as UNICEF Children Advocate".

The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on economic matters, deployed to the Vice-President office, Ayodele Adu, has died in an Indian hospital on Friday.
The Minister of Solid Mineral Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, confirmed the death of the Presidential aide in a condolence message issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Olayinka Oyebode.
Mr. Fayemi, who expressed shock and sadness, described Adu’s death as a personal loss to him and a major loss to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Nigeria in general.
The minister stated that the deceased, who served as a board member of the Fountain Company Limited of the Ekiti state government when he was governor of the state, was a man of courage, character and conviction.
“He was a distinguished Nigerian, an honourable Ekiti man, who through hard work and determination worked his way to the top of his professional calling and left marks of excellence on every assignment he undertook,” Fayemi was quoted as saying.
“He was a man of courage, character and conviction, who had a great passion for the Ekiti Project. It is indeed a painful loss.
“We shall surely miss him.’’


He prayed that Almighty God would grant him eternal rest and give his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no official confirmation of the death of the presidential aide from the office of the vice-president as of the time of filing this report. (NAN).

US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen has condemned Turkey’s judicial system after a court issued an arrest warrant that accuses him of ordering last month’s bid to topple President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“It is well-documented that the Turkish court system is without judicial independence, so this warrant is yet another example of President Erdogan’s drive for authoritarianism and away from democracy,” he said in a statement late on Thursday.
The arrest warrant, issued earlier in the day, accuses Gulen of “ordering the July 15 coup,” the Anadolu news agency reported.
Gulen strongly denies any involvement in the attempted putsch and the movement he leads insists it is a charitable network promoting tolerant Islam.
“The issuance of an arrest warrant from a Turkish court changes nothing about my status or my views,” Gulen said.
“I have repeatedly condemned the coup attempt in Turkey and denied any knowledge or involvement.”

The Senator representing Bauchi South senatorial district, Ali Wakili, has urged politicians to stop overheating the polity over budget padding, asking them to sheathe their swords in the overall interest of the country.
The senator, who stated this yesterday during an interview with newsmen in Bauchi, also warned politicians against unguarded and provocative utterances concerning the crisis at the National Assembly, which, he said, was becoming embarrassing and uncalled for.
The lawmaker called on the administration of Mohammed Abubakar to desist from trading blames over liabilities incurred, pointing out that with good governance and needs assessment, the state can effectively utilise what it receives from the federation account.
He said the National Assembly was going to probe state governments on how the bailout funds were ultised, noting that the move was to ensure probity and accountability.

Member representing Katsina-Ala/Ukum and Logo federal constituency Barr Emmanuel Udende today in Sankera, The Headquarters of Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, has donated self-employment materials to some of his constituents to help lift them out poverty.
The items he donated yesterday included 30 motorcycles, 50 grinding machines, and 10 generating sets as well as 50 sewing machines to women and youth in the area.
the lawmaker who said this was just the first phase of his empowerment scheme, explained that the gesture was in partial fulfillment of his campaign pledges to the constituents.
Udende explained further that he was giving back to his constituents who he stated resisted all attempts that were aimed at frustrating his return to the green chamber last year.
He recalled that while going round to solicit for the peoples support in 2015, he came face to face with some of the challenges faced by the rural dwellers, hence his coming to their aid to enable them engage in meaningful business ventures and in the process better their economic lives.
"This is just a token of appreciation for the support you gave to me during the poll. I must say I am very grateful over the show of love, even as much as you people did not like the PDP, you still elected me on that platform as the only person in the whole of Tiv land and I must say I am grateful, this is the first phase as part of activities to mark my one year in office in my second tenure at the House of Representatives", he stated.
He expressed concern over the level of poverty in the land owing to the economic crunch, but stressed that the measures being taken by the Buhari administration would herald better tidings.
The APC chieftain frowned at the situation whereby such gestures he had extended to the people during his first tenure were either sold or misapplied and urged them to use the equipment for the primary purpose for which they were donated.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to the AUTHORITY on Sunday, including Elder Chiangi Abeke, Ikyuen Ikyo, Emmanuel Shikaan and Mrs Mgunengen Asenge expressed gratitude over the gesture even as they promised to use the items so donated only for the purpose for which they were meant for.
Mrs Asenge who was handed a Bajaj motorcycle, particularly expressed joy saying it was the first coming from an elected official from the area to her.
She called on the people to double their support so that Mr Udende could continue to attract better things to his constituents.

Solomon Edebiri, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant in the June 20 party primaries, said that he had resigned from the party.
Edebiri made the disclosure while speaking with journalists in Obayanton, near Benin on Thursday.
He attributed his decision to leave the party to “dishonesty of the party leadership’’.
According to him, what happened on June 20 was awful and a complete negation of what democratic tenet is all about.
“I can officially tell you that I have resigned my membership of the PDP and that I have also refused to join either the Sherrif faction or any other party.
“My resignation followed the dishonesty of the party leadership who reneged on its pledge to provide a level-playing field for all aspirants at the primaries.
“And we had all also pledged to move with the party beyond the primaries, provided the primaries was free, fair and just.
“There were reports that the party’s institution gave a specific instruction to party chairmen at the Local government level for members to vote for a particular aspirant, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
“So my understanding is that the primaries was not free, fair and just,’’ he said
“I will not hold Ize-Iyamu (responsible) but the party leadership.
“And I neither want to fight anyone nor remain in the party,’’ he said.
Edebiri also confirmed that the party’s former BOT Chairman, Tony Anenih, reached out to him.
“I refused to honour the invitation to his Abuja residence because of what happened in 2012.
“In 2012, he offered me money to dump my aspiration and join the PDP but I declined.
“In 2016, he still referred to that episode, accusing me of joining forces with Adams Oshiomhole to fight the party.
“Not knowing what he might also say after meeting with him and to keep my sanctity and integrity, I thought the best decision was to avoid meeting with him or any other leader of the party,’’ he said.
Edebiri, however, said that he would continue to serve the people of the state in other capacity through other foundations he had established to serve humanity.
“I have also told my supporters and follower to avoid money politics and eschew violence as no aspiration is worth innocent blood, ‘’ he said.
Edebiri contested the governorship seat in 2012 on the platform of the defunct ANPP and came third.
He joined the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) after he lost the 2012 governorship ticket and was a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), before he pitched tent with the PDP in 2014. (NAN)

Nigerian business tycoon, Gen. TY Danjuma, has been named Board Chairman by the NatCom Development & Investment Limited “NatCom”, trading as ntel. 
The announcement was made on Wednesday, July, 2016 following General Danjuma’s inaugural board meeting. 
With General Danjuma as board chairman, former chairman, Dr. Tunde Ayeni, becomes Vice Chairman. Other members of the board include Captain Idahosa Okunbo, Abiola Ayeni, Kasheem Shettima, Philip Chukwu, Kola Adesina, John Darlington, Dan Kunle, Babatunde Omotoba and Kamar Abass. General Danjuma, fondly known as ‘the green general’ on account of his environmental activism, has interests in oil and gas, banking and shipping.

 A respected environmentalist and philanthropist, he was Chairman of Abuja Green Society and through his own Danjuma Foundation, established in 2009, passionately supports poverty alleviation, education and medical aid initiatives across Nigeria. General Danjuma brings to the ntel board robust commercial experience covering some three decades in the public and private sectors, following a successful career in the army from where he retired as a three-star General and Chief of Army Staff in 1980. He also served as Minister of Defence in the first term of the civilian administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo. Commenting on this key addition to ntel’s board, Kamar Abass, ntel’s CEO, remarked “we are delighted to have a man of General TY Danjuma’s standing join us. As our new chairman, and as a shareholder, we welcome his support as we add momentum to our growth and development in Nigeria’s telecoms industry. Network services in Port Harcourt are scheduled to commence early in Q4. NatCom projects making investments totalling more than $1billion by 2020. ntel is Nigeria’s most advanced mobile 4G/LTE network providing superfast Internet Access that enables high-definition voice, data and video services. ntel’s network is built on the 900/1800 Mhz frequency bands which are the best propagation frequencies for the deployment of 4G/LTE technology. ntel’s bouquet of services includes: National Bandwidth; International Voice Termination, International Bandwidth; Mobile and Fixed Communications services. The company made its first on-net test data call in Lagos on Monday, January 18, 2016 and followed this with its first on-net Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) call in Lagos on Thursday, February 25, 2016. Commercial operations commenced on Friday April 8, 2016.
